The e-mail went something like this: “By the way, do you ever still think about starting a magazine.” The response was the best part: “All the time.”
And so began our more than one year developing the publication you are now holding. This magazine was conceived several years ago, an idea that never took root but that lingered in our imaginations and nagged us as we considered the possibility. What we envisioned: a beautiful, full-color magazine that reflects the stunning beauty of the Shenandoah Valley, the place so many visit, and the place we are so fortunate to call home.
So the e-mail exchanged happened, and the nagging got even more persistent. We met over coffee, made plans, worried our spouses with financial details and endured some hurdles to get this first issue out.
Our goal is the same now as when we conceived the idea: to display in words and pictures the beauty of our region’s people and places, both for those of us who live here and for those who come to enjoy our Valley.
This issue, we start off with features that reflect those goals. Our cover story is about George Hirschmann, a well-known face among TV viewers in our region. We all know he is TV3’s chief meteorologist, but his past work as an actor and comedian may surprise you.
We cover other surprises, too: Our first history department story is about a Confederate general who fathered a child with a black woman. Also, we chat with Harrisonburg downtown revitalizer Eddie Bumbaugh, check out the Valley’s blooms and look at an interesting way of making pottery.
Plus, check out our calendar for some of the events happening in our region during the coming months.
For now, though, why not pour yourself a tall glass of lemonade or sweet tea and explore a slice of Shenandoah Living.
